  • Testing system for glow-wire tests on plastics

Semi-automatic testing system with glow-wire

This semi-automatic testing system is used for glow-wire tests on plastics to IEC/EN 60695-2-12 GWFI or IEC/EN 60695-2-13 GWIT.

In these tests the fire behavior of plastics is determined using a glowing wire pressed against a circular test plate. The result is then included in the properties of the plastic as a characteristic value.

  • Specimen is usually a circular plastic test plate with a diameter of 85 mm and a thickness of 0.75 mm, 1.5 mm or 3 mm.
  • Tests to IEC/ EN 60695-2-12 determine the glow-wire flammability index (GWFI).
In a glow-wire temperature-range from 550 °C to 960 °C this is the highest test temperature at which flames or smoldering material self-extinguish within 30 seconds after removal of the glow-wire. Tissue paper placed underneath the specimen must not be ignited by burning droplets. The specimen itself must not ignite either.
  • Tests to IEC/ EN 60695-2-13 determine the glow-wire ignition temperature (GWIT).
GWIT is 25 K above the test temperature which produces a burning time <5 seconds in three successive specimens.
  • Testing system is equipped with a motor-driven sliding carriage on which the specimen is transported towards the glow-wire. At the end of the prescribed time the specimen is automatically returned to the starting position.
